“Think of Twitter as the Canary in the Coal Mine”

By Olivier / December 5, 2009

So said Morgan Johnston of Jet Blue Airways to describe how he sees the role that social media play in a company’s communication strategy.

Erik Qualman’s Socialnomics blog has long examined the havoc wreaked on the lives of individuals, brands, and companies by social media. In addition to keeping a fascinating and educational watch on the issue, Socialnomics occasionally posts short instructional videos that have the added bonus of being well produced and quite enjoyable to watch.

In July, a video entitled Social Media Revolution was posted on the site, detailing the rise of all the socio-economic movements related to social media. It was followed by Social Media ROI, a video attempting to demonstrate the high return on investment of a social media-based communication strategy.

One thing’s for sure, Socialnomics is preaching to the converted, and some of the shortcuts used to come up with those numbers are—in my mind—debatable. Just the same, Erik Qualman’s presentation is thought provoking and well worth a watch.
