How’s Your Personal Branding?

By veronique / December 6, 2009

corporate-branding I started pondering the phenomenon when I stumbled across this fascinating article (and the dozens that ensued). How’s my personal branding? My first instinct was to think, “Not bad, I just bought a new pair of designer shoes and I’m off to the salon tomorrow . . .” Does that seem right? Well, let’s just say that personal branding goes well beyond one’s appearance.

The concept is based on the fame—and often, notoriety—that people acquire after repeated appearances in the media. In other words, it’s their reputation or celebrity. The phenomenon is not new by any means; the powerful image of Marilyn Monroe and the Dalai Lama’s enduring message are perfect examples of personal branding.

However, the phenomenon has recently experienced exponential growth due to the inception of a global communication syste—social networks. Your thoughts, opinions, and reputation are conveyed through social networks instantaneously and sometimes even without your knowledge or consent. Your remarks are shared with and commented on by hundreds—even thousands—of Internet users who are forming positive or negative opinions of you. Information travels at breakneck speeds—and so does your personal branding.
