Who Would Have Thought It Could Pay to Doodle on Styrofoam Cups?

At some point we’ve all doodled on a napkin while gabbing on the phone. Or on the back of a placemat at Saint-Hubert while waiting for a quarter chicken with fries. But have you ever considered selling your scribbles?

Cheeming Boey—a young Californian artist and animator—did exactly that. OK, fine—they’re hardly scribbles. What he manages to create with nothing but a Styrofoam cup and a Sharpie is much closer to art. Whether they’re mythical frescoes or depictions of everyday life, his illustrations burst with details, action and depth.

The idea dawned on him one day as he was sitting in a café, looking for something to draw on. With no paper in sight, he went for his coffee cup. A few hundred cups later, a friend challenged him to try and sell them.

His cups now go for anywhere between 140 and 280 American bucks.
