Snow Tagging—Winter Eco-communication

In winter 2009, natural media company CURB launched an ecological winter campaign that used a new form of advertising—snow tagging.
The premise couldn’t be simpler. The medium—snow (on sidewalks, snowbanks, parks, etc.). The tool—a stamp. The goal—emblazoning a logo or message on snow-covered surfaces.
The images above are from a campaign for Sports Channel and Extreme. No sooner had the first flakes hit the ground than London found itself peppered with over 2,000 logos—and all in a single afternoon! Although fleeting, the initiative quite the impact on the public and the media. And here’s the icing on the cake—it’s 100% environmentally friendly!
I anxiously await the day that a Canadian agency catches on. Just imagine the Mont-Royal imprinted with an ad for a vaycay down south, or post-blizzard benches tagged with a moving company’s phone number. Our long and dreary winters are an open invitation to snow tagging and—unlike in England—our snow sticks around for more than a couple of days!
