Edison—Software for Saving

“Over 30 billion kilowatt-hours of energy are wasted annually worldwide because many of us simply forget to shut down our computers when we’re not using them. If we could just improve the way in which we use our computers, the energy savings would total over $3 billion. In terms of energy, the carbon emissions of just 15 computers are equivalent to exhaust of one car.”
Edison is a free software application that measures your computer’s energy consumption (PCs only). Basically Verdiem—the company behind Edison—wanted to help enterprises reduce their energy usage.
The installed software configures all the computer’s energy saving settings and puts all the biggest energy consumers (hard drive, monitor) in sleep mode when not in use.
“If just one percent of PCs used Edison we could potentially reduce environmental impacts by seven billion pounds of CO2, which is equal to taking more than a half million cars off the road,” explains Verdiem’s President and CEO Kevin Klustner.
The best way to combat climate change is by adopting few simple daily habits, like shutting down your computer and turning off the monitor at night, or configuring your computer to activate the screen saver faster. Edison displays your estimated energy savings. Sure, the figure for one day doesn’t seem like much, but seeing a monthly result multiplied by the number of computers in our office is enough to understand that it’s the little things that make a big difference.
