Let’s Make a PACT!

We all do our part for the environment. Recycling has become part of the daily routine. We use public transit. We say no to the cashier at the drugstore when asked if we want a plastic bag. In short, we all do what we can for the planet.

And at the workplace? OK, we recycle there too. We try not to print things unless really necessary. We collect coffee grounds for composting. And starting now, Quebec graphic designers can do much more thanks to the Projet d’Action Consommation Tranquille (PACT) [Gentle Consumption Action Project]. Founded in 2009 in partnership with UQÀM, this non-profit organization promotes responsible and sustainable graphic design.

Responsible graphic design? Come again? Aside from choosing FSC-certified paper and keeping packaging to a minimum, what more is there? According to the PACT, it’s all about integrating sustainable development practices to the graphic design of brands, goods, or services, right from the get-go. In other words, studying and taking into account the brand’s life cycle in order to make the best graphic decisions possible. In addition to choosing environmentally responsible processes and materials, the PACT also encourages choosing ethical and responsible advertising messages.

The PACT does more than just preach abstract notions; it offers training and advice labs to help graphic designers put responsible design into practice. By becoming a member, designers gain access to a network of specialized services and collaborators pursuing similar goals.

Hmm . . .  interesting stuff. espresso hasn’t gone completely green yet, but we’re making a concerted effort and we all feel that we ought to raise the bar a little higher. PACT training would certainly be a great first step towards a more responsible espresso.

OK, it’s settled. Today, we print girls are making a PACT!

Have your say!
