Techno Tops and Flops
The world of technology has seen its fair share of tops and flops. Here are my faves:

5. Sega Dreamcast
Sega’s most recent video game console got its life cut rather short. Sure, I’ll admit it—I own one, but it’s been relegated to a cardboard box at the back of my closet. |

4. LaserDisc
Few remember this technology from the 80s and early 90s. The Cegep I went to invested in a LaserDisc player but had a rather pitiful collection of titles. They were very popular in Japan, however! |

3. Windows Vista
Let’s just say that it wasn’t Windows’ finest oeuvre. It did have its advantages, however. You had time to enjoy your coffee, organize your papers, and read the Sports pages all in the time it took to boot up! |

2. Mp3 players that aren’t the iPod
No product—neither Zune, Sensa, nor Walkman—has managed to dethrone the iPod. There’s lots of buzz every time a new mp3 player is announced, but it always dies down the minute the device hits the market. |

1. Virtual reality
Hailed in the late 80s as the next big thing, the virtual reality trend petered out pretty quickly but not before giving rise to such masterpieces as the unforgettable film The Lawnmower Man. |

4. Wi-Fi
What did we ever do before Wi-Fi? Web 2.0 would likely not have been able to develop so quickly if it weren’t for the increasingly mobile Web. |

3. The iPhone
Apple didn’t invent the smart phone—but they improved it and made it much cooler than what all those suits were wearing on their belts. |

2. Google
The Internet is great, but it’s even better now that we can find what we’re looking for in a snap. |

1. The iPod
I personally can’t go a day without my iPod. My CDs have all gone the way of my Dreamcast. Why bother lugging around a stack of CDs when you can fit your entire music collection in your back pocket? |
